About

MXL: No Time is Now – Type’n’Tech Design Lab

Nowness. Liveness. Simultaneity.
How can parallel layers of time, asynchronous moments and fleeting presence be made visible in 8 weeks in the unconventional forms of a post-digital clock/timer intervention?

01  Ticking Piece                Elena Schmitz + Ada Helweg
How do we make sense of all the information and impressions we encounter over time? As time passes, we are constantly processing what is new to us and connecting it with what we already know. In Ticking Pieces, we aimed to portray this process through visuals that continuously alternate between confusion and clarity.

02 le corps qui ne compte plus                                     Adrianos Finder
Le Corps qui ne compte plus is an object installation developed from a durational performance. In the performance, I rotated continuously w and aloud until counting was no longer possible. The action was repeated three times. The resulting material is presented in three states: a complete image of the body, a linear and bodily translation, and a version disrupted by oscillators.

    03 Disalight Harmony                                        Benedikt Bruchhauser
Where did the time go? We mostly experience time different to the clock. It flies by while enjoying ourselves or it stretches infinetely whilst working on tedious tasks. But still we live our lives by the clock, for the clock, under its rule. It is our standard on everything, we judge ourselves on its unnatural quotas. This Dissonance, between our time and the clocks, can lead to psychological issues and a disruption of ones sense of self-esteem. What if we flip the script?

04  A Machine of Rhythm                                  Cora Kindermann + Jana Hartmann

Inside every GPU, high-frequency oscillators generate electrical cycles that pace and coordinate computation. Each clock edge advances instructions, moves data and prevents the GPU’s parallel components from drifting out of sync.

05 Intrusive Timer                      Greta CesarisIntrusive Timer is conceived as a reflection on the time that slips away in our use of technology.

06 Spiral down Time                      Joel van Hees
Spiral Down Time explores time as a spatial and typographic system rather than a linear unit. Built with JavaScript and WebGL, the project visualizes hours, minutes and seconds as an evolving generative structure.

07 Math of Time                           Timm Sonnenschein
The Math of Time is an alternative clock system that visualizes the hidden mathematics behind everyday time perception. In daily life, we constantly calculate time. How many hours of sleep are left? When do I have to leave? How long will it take? These small equations run silently in the background, almost physically. This clock brings them to the surface.

08 The Anatomy of Time                                     Lara Dederichs
In medieval times, “one moment” was said to be a unit approximately 90 seconds long. Nowadays, a moment is no longer a unit that sticks to a certain amount of time, but describes an intuitive and very subjective feeling, which gives this unit of time a whole dimension that depends on parameters like mood or physical state, which can alter the way we perceive a moment completely. What happens in a moment and how do we perceive the passing of it?

10   Space Between Now                                   Yannick Lethgau
This experimental typographic animation explores an hypothetical idea of an infinite universe. Time is not linear but sequential, and past, present, future, and alternative realities coexist all at once.

11  Finding Time                                              Jakob Troll

In everyday life, full of appointments and obligations, it is often difficult to consciously perceive time or to take time for oneself. This audiovisual work explores the passing of time in an experimental way. Typographic elements are abstracted, distorted, and set in motion. As a result, reading the time becomes sometimes clear and sometimes intentionally unclear.

13 Chrono Vinyl Kaito Kedashiro
Chrono Vinyl is a digital clock installation that explores time as a process of inscription and erasure rather than linear measurement. The work treats the present moment as something that briefly appears, leaves a trace, and is continuously overwritten by the passage of time. Instead of preserving time as data or memory, the installation emphasizes its fragility and impermanence.
